Grenfell Tower apartment block in is located in North Kensington London England. The Concrete structure started design in 1967 and was completed in 1974. The building consists on 24 floors and used to house 120 flats that included 200 bedroom in 20 storeys. The bottom 4 storeys were used for nonresidential activities till 2015-2016. The building was designed in a Brutalist style of its era by Clifford Wearden and Associates. The Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council approved its building plans and construction started in 1970.
The Build is built 67.30 Meter (220 ft 10 inches) tall containing 120 one and two bedroom flats (six dwellings per four) capable of housing around 600 people. Each floor was 22m square, giving an approximate usable area of 476 square meters. The layout of each floor did not have any structural walls, making it flexible to floor plan designs. Two bedroom flats are located on the far north and south of the building and one bedroom flats are located facing east and west. Stairs and lift services are located on the north and south of the building.
Most buildings of these era were constructed using traditional brick blocks and Grenfell tower was one of the first buildings to use precast insulated concrete blocks. This gave the wall a unique texture. One other feature that made this building unique from building or its era was, the tower held 6 flats per floor instead of 4 that most other building did.
The tower got it`s name from a road which ran to the south the building. The name of the road was Grenfell Road. Grenfell Road was names after a British field Marshal Lord Grenfell, who was a senior army Commander of the 19th and early 20th century.
In 2015-2016 the building went threw major refurbishment where two of it non residential floors were converted to residential. After the conversion the Grenfell Tower held 127 flats and 227 Bedrooms. The refurbishment gave Grenfell Tower new windows, new cladding with thermal insulation.
